Last Fall, I went with Seth and Maggie to Neale Woods in North Omaha, then to a friend's house to ride horses into the sunset. :) After they were done with the horses, we walked down to a creek where we were jumped by the neighbors' horses. I was shooting Seth and Maggie with my back to the horses. They were looking increasingly worried so I turned around and there was a pack of punk horses about 8 inches behind me.

This is Becky, all-star hair dresser at Studio 123. She is responsible for the hair of almost every McGuigan in Omaha. And she's pregnant! Well, technically she isn't pregnant anymore. We're taking her son's newborn photos this week. But she was recently pregnant. Becky and her husband Chris had me over to their house and we took these photos in their backyard. (Really, their backyard. It was pretty incredible.)

This is the wedding of Mandy and Jeremy. They were married in October in Lincoln, NE. They had the sweetest ceremony fill of more laughs than I've ever seen at a wedding. I just finished up the first bunch of family photos from October. There have been some really great families calling me up this year! I'm so happy to have the chance to hang out with all these really great people.

This is Beth and her son. Beth is also a rockin photographer here in Omaha. We went to the North Downtown area and got some shots around the really awesome buildings that are hidden back over there.

Oh, Lauren and Mike. Where to begin.

First off, I credit the awesomeness and intimacy of these photos to the hour we spent together in the car prior to shooting. I think my new rule for engagement photos is that we first have to spend 60 minutes confined to a small space in order to become friends before I take your photos.

Secondly, they're good looking.

Third, they said, "Do you want to jump over a creek and go to a collapsing barn?" To which I replied, "Hold my camera while I jump."

And finally, the scenery and lighting couldn't have been better. At the end, the sun went down to just the right spot and the backgrounds looked fake!

Magic happened that day. Everything was perfect. We shot until the sun was completely gone and it started to rain.

And then I gave myself the biggest shin bruise ever seen while getting out of Mike's car when they brought me home.

This class is for beginners who have an interest in photography and are looking for some starter tips. A few things we're going to cover:

The basics of your camera: All those dials and letters on your camera that make you go, "Huh? What?"
Shooting: After you've set everything in the camera, you still have to know where to put yourself and your subject.
Post shooting: Easy tips for enhancing your photos with editing software
Your equipment: Why you should consider investing in some upgrades.
Model session with a couple of families

Coffee and drinks will be provided, as well as lunch. You'll also get a gift bag with some photo goodies to take home. After the class, I'm going to set up a group online for everyone to upload their photos and start some on-going discussions about things that might come up after class. I'll be checking in and answering questions periodically!

Registration: The $125 class fee is due at the time of registration in order to reserve your spot. I'm limiting the class to 10 participants so spots are first come first serve! Please send me an email if you have any questions or would like to grab a spot!

Here are a few of my favorite shots from Megan and Nick's downtown engagement session. I love taking pictures of people from above. Pictures from above, and pictures shot with way too wide of an angle. Those are my weaknesses.

There are a few tricks to getting this type of overhead shot of people laying down. First, if you're in a park, check for poop. Next, apologize for what you're about to do. Third, straddle your clients and throughly invade their personal space. And fourth, reassure them that you're not a total creep and that the picture looks awesome.

I've come across this really strange phenomenon where I have lots of brides with the same name each wedding season. This year I had multiple Megans and Amys. Next year I have three Danielles, including a Danielle & Sean and a Danielle & Shawn on back to back weekends. How does that happen???

This is (a) Megan and Josh's wedding below. They had the super incredible engagement session with the balloons earlier this year. They brought the balloons back for their way stylish and fun wedding. Megan is a graphic designer and she put her personal touch on everything. I think this wedding was truly a representation of who Megan and Josh are in non-wedding real life.

BROOKE! During the emailing and arranging of brooke's photos, at no time did anyone mention that she's a total rockstar. Her session was beyond fun. It was amazing. It was one of those nights that I felt so alive and so in the moment. I was exactly where I was meant to be, with exactly the kind of client I dream of. I swear, she said to me, "Can I take my picture in front of that Batman sign?" and I felt like we were soul mates. I had a major superhero obsession in high school and I felt like we were channeling each other. :)

I also have some rockin family photos with my niece and nephew, a wedding party out in a field right before a storm, a seriously committed couple who said yes when I asked them to sit on a crate next to a dumpster in an alley, and the bride who introduced me to something called a shotski.

Mini Sessions - November 12!

Here are the details for this year's mini sessions! Because September and October are already pretty full with weddings, engagements and a few last-minute seniors, I'm not going to be able to take a lot of families this year. I don't want any new or repeat customers to get left out, so I'm doing a late season mini session at my studio. It's scheduled for November 12th and you are guaranteed your images and disc back by December 1st. That's less than a week after Thanksgiving! Everyone will still have plenty of time to get their holiday cards and gifts taken care of.

Again, I'm going to have these at my studio this year since it's so late in the season and I don't want to risk getting rained out. We will have an entire room to shoot in so I'm planning on doing two set ups. One will be holiday themed - think bright colors, lots of multicolored trees, white-washed wood background, garlands and lights hanging down. The second will be unholiday - probably a patterned background of some sort and a big funky piece of furniture. The room is very versatile with both natural light and studio lighting. It the weather permits, the second shoot may be outside in either our garden area or against our old brick building (if the garden area is completely bare and pathetic looking).

The session is $80 for:
- 30 minutes with the photographer
- A disc of 5 high-res images
- One 8x10 print and two 5x7 prints
- Laughs, memories, cookies, hot chocolate, a peak at the new digs

Time slots begin at 8:00am and are available every 30 minutes. Half of the booking fee is due to reserve your spot. Please email me through the contact form if you are interested in setting up your mini session!

Eliza - Omaha Newborn Photographer

This is baby Eliza. If it were possible to keep her a newborn forever, she could be a professional newborn model. She slept the entire session. Never have I had a baby stay alseep the entire time. But if I were her, and I were stuffed into a fluffy sleeping bag and then nestled into a basket full of blankets, I would probably be more than willing to stay there forever as well.

Melanie and Chris had a wedding. It was unbelievable. It was held at the Ackerhurst Dairy Barn in Bennington. Take note of that name if you're looking for a beautiful venue for your wedding. And then after you do that, call me to photograph it. Every little detail of this day was so beautiful. Not only the decor and the location, but the relationships and friendships in the wedding party, the very personal ceremony, and the obvious love between Chris and Melanie. I was so lucky to have been chosen by these two to document their wedding.

Katie and Kyle - Omaha Engagement Photography

Katie and Kyle are camp counselors and they asked me to come out to their camp to do their engagement photos. I was sold at that, but then they decided to go hiking and canoeing and build a fire. And they fed me a smore. I feel like I should cash out my chips and walk away because I don't know what gets better than this. I am so in love with these batch of pictures. There is such an unbelievable outpouring of emotion in these photos.

This engagement sessions also marks the first time I've ever shot photos from a paddleboat.

I took Dylan's six month photos last winter. I remember looking at six month old Dylan compared to six weekk old Lennon and Dylan looked so big. Now he's a year old and he still looks big. Amber, Jeremy and I met at 8:00 in the morning. I think it was maybe 90° out already. This is the way it is now. Welcome to Summer. Your photoshoots/weddings will be hot. There will be sweating. You'll wonder if it's really worth all this for pictures outside. Yes, of course it's worth it. What's a little dehydration in exchange for awesome photos?

Amber and Jeremy are getting married later this year at a glass chapel in Iowa. I've only seen pictures of this mythical glass chapel, but it looks totally unbelievably insanely gorgeous. That's a lot of adjectives. You know I mean it. Judging by how awesome they were for their engagement photos, their wedding is going to be great. I always tell people not to be afraid to move in front of the camera. Seriously, don't be afraid! Move! I rely a lot on the interaction between my couples. Your connection is what I'm photographing and I want, nay need, you to show me that connection. These two really got it and there were so many funny and sweet photographs. I actually laughed when I was looking through them. They really made all the sweat and waking up early and dragging of sofas worth it!

First off, thanks for the amazing responses to my post on Friday about some assistant positions! I'm going to be emailing all of you back over the next couple of days.
And those of you awaiting various other returned emails, I promise I'm not ignoring you. My inbox has about 30 highlighted emails that need answered. I was planning on answering them all yesterday, but I was at home with Lennon all day and had to make the strategic choice of either taking a shower or answering emails during his nap. Sorry, but I picked the shower. :)
Congratulations to Rachael, the creator of our photography co-op! She officially gets the keys to the space on Friday. I can't wait to go check it out and meet all the ladies who will be moving in. I'm so excited to be a part of such a creative endeavor.

Chris and Amy Got Married! - Omaha Wedding Photography

Every week when I head to a wedding, I am always so nervous. I'm not afraid I'm going to mess up or do something wrong in some way, but I'm nervous about the actual creation process I'm about to take on. I don't think of myself as simply another wedding vendor who you hire just to be able to check it off the list. I think of myself as someone who is creating images, art maybe, that you will keep for the rest of your life. That is intimidating. Creating something so personal is a huge responsibility and my only true desire is to make you guys happy.

Chris and Amy had such a wonderful and beautiful wedding. I decided to do their entire post in black and white because it seemed so fitting. Their pictures are so full of joy that I wanted the focus to be off of the photo as a whole and on to the subjects. Does that make a bit of sense to anyone else or am I speaking photographer mumbo jumbo?

I am so incredibly proud to share these images. I am consistently seeing growth in my work and it makes me so happy to be able to pass that along to everyone. Thank you so much to Chris and Amy for giving me the opportunity to share their wedding day with them!

Stephanie and Joe's Family and Engagement Photos - Omaha Wedding Photography

I met Stephanie in a very interesting way. I was checking my email to kill time during labor (thanks, epidural) and I'd gotten an email from Stephanie telling me about her wedding. My son went to the NICU after being born (it ended up not being anything serious) and I went down from my room in the middle of the night to spend some time with him. I introduced myself to his nurse and guess who it was. Stephanie. She said that she had emailed me earlier in the day, but a friend who I was also working with told her I was having a baby at any time so I may not respond. Well, her friend was right. Not only was I having my baby at the exact time she emailed me, but there I was in a hospital gown at 2am to prove it.

Shortly after our first meeting, Stephanie and Joe had their baby too. We met back up (I was fully clothed this time) a few weeks ago to take some photos before their wedding this fall.

Everything about their wedding was so so fun. Their photos are the most energetic and joyful batch of wedding photos I've ever handed back to a client. They really set out to have a rockin party of a wedding - and did they ever. Jared got bashed in the face with a giant mound of petals, we got to shoot photos on a piano in a bar, there was an illicit toast, and the night ended with a giant dance party.

Lazy Sunday. I had the day off after two weddings this weekend, so we chilled out as a family. (And by "day off" I of course mean "a day of editing not shooting." Days off don't really exist anymore.) I try to take photos of Lennon and Matt a few times a month, but rarely ever do I get any pictures of me. It's the curse of being the photographer in the family. There's one in every bunch. So, for you folks, my first piece of advise: It's important to occasionally hand over control and let someone else take some pictures. And the second piece of advise: Hand people your camera with the strap held out first so they have no choice but to put it around their neck. The only thing worse than not having pictures of yourself is having a broken camera because someone dropped it.

I loved hanging out with Kait and Jake! They were funny, easy going and I'm really excited for their rustic style wedding in the Fall. They also brought me a glass bottle Coke to the shoot as part of some picnic props we used. The way to my heart is through caffeine and sugar. I was very impressed with Jake's manly know-how when we realized that we didn't have a bottle opener and he popped open our sodas on the side of a fire hydrant.

Can I tell you guys the truth about something? I hate blogging! The typing, the copying, the pasting, the uploading. It is not my favorite thing in the world. But these days, blogging is a photographer's best tool for staying current with clients. It gives you guys a very up-close and personal look at what I'm currently working on and it's an easy way (despite my complaining) to communicate with everyone when new stuff is happening. Plus (and this is probably the best reason of all) it lets everyone get a peak at their photos before the batch is finished and online in their private gallery. I do it because we're all impatient - you can't wait to see it and I can't wait to show you. Impatience in this case is a very good thing. I would be more concerned if you didn't care when your photos were done. I want you to be excited to see yourselves on the blog!

Soooo.... Here are a few previews of Megan and Josh and their daughter. Megan brought along a seriously awesome bouquet of giant balloons. It's hard not to have fun when there are balloons involved. After we were done playing with balloons and freezing our butts off (WHAT IS UP WITH THAT, NEBRASKA?) we went to a nearby coffee shop to meet up with little Piper and take some family photos.

Amanda and Kris - March 19th

Amanda and Kris got married! They could not have been more sweet, more cute or more in love on their wedding day. There wasn't a person present who wasn't smiling and laughing along with them.

Funny story about the stairwell picture below... Kris was heading into the sanctuary so him and Amanda could have their first-look moment together. But at the exact same time Amanda came out of the door above him. Someone screamed, "NOOOO STOP!" (It might have been me.) I took a picture because, hey. Why wouldn't I. Here We Go, 2011!

Wedding Mania 2011 starts next week. I've had the last four months off from weddings and work in general, really. The winter months are always a little slow in this business but this time around it was a well needed break. As I came back from maternity leave, I struggled to keep up with emails and communications with clients. I lost all motivation to work as I tried to come to terms with our new version of "normal" in life. Having a baby is an emotionally complex journey. There's the obvious love I felt for my baby, but there was also the unexpected in the form of guilt, pressure and fear. Being a working parent isn't easy. I felt like taking time away from my son made me a bad person. I don't know why I'm sharing all this other than to let all those new parents out there know: I can relate. I think having an understanding of parenthood helps me relate better to new parents (and the not-so-new parents too) when I walk into their homes. Just like having been married and having been a bride helps me relate to couples on their wedding days. That sort of parlays into a goal I have for myself this year... I want to get to know you guys a lot better and put more of my personality up front in my blog and our meetings. The success of your wedding photos really depends on your relationships with me - you have to be comfortable with me and trust me on your wedding day in order to get those really honest, emotional shots. How can you do that if I don't let you know who I am?

Anyway, that's a little bit about me and what I've been up to. This year is BIG. We've got lots of gorgeous stuff coming up; downtown weddings, barn weddings, weddings on lakes, weddings in art galleries, buses, parties, LOADS of amazing couples and engagement sessions... It's gonna be huge. My brain is so well rested and I'm ready to have fun with you guys this season. Last year was awesome but I am soooo glad to be unpregnified this time around. I was pregnant at all but one wedding last year. The season went from praying I didn't throw up during the reception to praying I didn't go into labor during the reception. And a couple of times I got stuck on the ground trying to get a shot and had to be assisted back to my feet. But this year I am back to my old self and can take luxury in things like safely standing on a step-stool and getting drunk at your receptions. I kid, I kid.

Jess and Erich's Wedding

Jess and Erich were my last couple of 2010 to get married. It was a colorful and romantic end to the year! You can't really tell from the photos, but we had our first snowfall of the season the night before. It was about 20° outside and everything was covered in ice. Happy New Year everyone! I'm finally back into a bit of a routine with work and life. I grossly underestimated the amount of time a baby will take up! Who knew that Lennon would want constant, 24 hour a day care and attention?

I have a few sessions from this Fall that I never got around to posting. One was Nikki's senior photos. Everything went perfect during this session. Nikki was fun and beautiful, the weather was perfect, and the scenery was gorgeous. I was massively pregnant (like 37 weeks) but made it work. (Let me tell ya, working without a giant belly now is so much easier.)

Eric and Nicole's Wedding

Eric and Nicole planned a beautiful, vintage inspired, German influenced, romantic wedding that was such a joy to be a part of. Kelli and Christian's Engagement Photos

Tis the month for engagement photos! It's hard not to share when I have such awesome clients to work with. I went with Kelli and Christian to the bar they got engaged at, then we headed out to a park for some sunset shots. The fall light is just too beautiful not to go out and take advantage of!

We also broke out the orange chair which hasn't made an appearance in a very long time. It totally suited the scene so we used it for a bunch of shots. Then, it sort of started to lurk in the background and show up in shots unintentionally. There's a whole series of photos with the chair peaking out of the corner. I think the chair is kind of like that creepy guy who pops up in all your reception photos. You're not really sure who he is or who invited him, but he's in like 50 pictures.

I usually tell people the best times to book sessions are early in the morning (like earlier than you probably want your photo taken) and late in the afternoon/evening. But sometimes the best times are the times you wouldn't normally consider. Like after sunset with Jared and Megan! We stayed out after the sun went down and snapped some engagement photos in the near-dark duskiness downtown.

New Site, Content and Pricing!

Okay, now we're in business. It took a bit longer than I had anticipated, but everything is up and running now. The pricing packages and wedding packages are a bit different now, but anyone who I was working with prior to the change will be able to book at the old packages. So, don't worry about that!

Everything is a bit simpler and streamlined. I think the new site is awesome. The old Flash galleries are gone. I had several people mention they had trouble using the old galleries so check out the new ones and hopefully these will work out better. A definite plus is that they're viewable on tablets and smart phones! (Look at me joining the revolution about five years too late.)

I wasn't sure about this self-imposed maternity break I'm taking, but then I found myself sprawled out on someone's sidewalk at 37 weeks pregnant trying to photograph their little girl and I realized that it's probably a good thing. We had to bring out their Boppy to prop myself up with. It was kind of embarrassing... But hey, new use for the Boppy! Photographer propper-upper.

I'm going to spend the next couple weeks editing everything and hopefully getting it all mailed out before the baby comes. I'll be saving a lot of posts for November and December when things are inevitably slow anyway. But since we're here you should check out Dave and Sarah in all their gorgeousness!

A Few Updates and Family Day Peeks!

If you're on the blog today you might notice that it looks a little different. And if you're not reading from the blog and you didn't notice... Well, it looks different. I'm getting ready to roll a couple things out. On Monday night the blog and site will be merging and everything will be accessible at christinemcguigan.com.

The other change will be an adjustment to packages and pricing. Session prices are going up a bit but the big change is going to be to the wedding packages. I'm starting to see what works and what doesn't as far as package options, so I'm simplifying big time on those! As always, anyone under contract for a wedding or anyone who has already booked a session for the fall will still be guaranteed the old pricing.

And speaking of fall sessions... I have about a week left of sessions then I'm taking the remainder of my pregnancy off. I'm due at the end of the month and it is getting to be nearly impossible for me to maneuver around during sessions! And once I'm down on the ground to get a shot, I'm pretty much stuck down there. Feel free to still contact me if you're hoping to book something before Christmas. I'm taking a limited number of appointments in late November.

I have sooooo much to share! I don't even know where to start! (Ya, ok. Chronologically, obviously.) Last week and the upcoming weeks are *packed* with family sessions, engagements and weddings. Saturday was our holiday session extravaganza at Elmwood Park. I was so disappointed when I woke up Saturday morning and it was dark and rainy. Much to my surprise though, all eight families still came out and made the best of it. One family even brought a raincoat for their son. (And yes, it was the cutest thing ever. You'll see.) We'll get to those photos a little later...

...Right now let's start with Dottie and Brandon's wedding! We had some Husker fans in this wedding so the day was divided up between wedding activities and football. They even made time for a little parking lot tailgate party outside their wedding venue. That kind of lighthearted attitude is a rare find on a wedding day! Dottie and Brandon kept everything so laid back and fun. It was a pleasure to spend the day with them!

Roddy and Reynah's Wedding

I have the pleasure of knowing Roddy through my husband. They became friends a few years ago and he instantly became one of those people in our lives who just appeared one day but felt like we'd known him for years. He and Reynah moved to Portland a few years ago so their wedding day back here in Omaha was really the first time I got to spend time with Reynah. Do I even need to point out what a match these two are? They obviously make each other insanely happy.

And on top of being adorable and in love, they also have some major style going on. Their wedding was a breezy, summer perfection. Roddy's suit was awesome. Reynah was gorgeous. They were married in the grotto at Elmwood Park and had their reception at the Slowdown. Seriously, how cool is that?

Jenny and Riley's Wedding

Jenny and Riley are in love. Really, what more is there to say about these two? Their relationship sustained over years of living in different states for work, college and missions. The bond they have shows and spills out like you wouldn't believe. These are two of the most beautiful and sweet people you'll ever see! They were married at the LDS temple and later held a ring exchange ceremony with all their guests in attendance. It was so intimate to have all their friends and family huddled around them while someone said a few words about love and marriage.

They also made lots of couples photos a priority - which I happen to be a huge proponent of. I don't push it on my clients because I believe that ultimately, this is your day and you should decide what your priorities are. But my professional opinion is that setting aside some private time for one-on-one photos with your new spouse is such a great thing. I know everyone is vying for your time and attention but you really owe it to yourselves to take a step away from all the craziness and have a few minutes of fun and relaxation. Even if it's just 20 minutes around the corner from the church where no one is looking, you should really consider budgeting it into your schedule.

I've photographed Addison and her family a few times now and she just gets exponentially cuter every time I see her. I really love getting to see the kids and babies I photograph grow over the months and years. It's definitely one of the most rewarding aspects of my job. I feel like I get to be a part of their lives and help share in all those important mile stones.

I'm getting all weepy... It's the pregnancy hormones talking.

Last weekend I had the pleasure of spending Melissa and Alex's wedding day with them. I've known Melissa for many years and I was very happy for her when she announced she was engaged. Then, I met Alex and I was even happier. Alex was one of the nicest guys I've met and the two of them go together so well.

I've known Lucas's mom, Jen, since (literally) the day I was born. And now, after a few decades of knowing each other, I had the pleasure of photographing her baby boy. And I'll tell ya, he is without a doubt one of the most perfect looking babies I've ever seen. He should be the new prototype for baby boys. He even acted perfect! He got tired of me taking his picture so he went to sleep. Just like that. One yawn, and then lights out.

The Don't Give Up Project

A couple of weeks ago I went to Colorado with nineteen other insanely talented photographers to be a part of the first Don't Give Up Project workshop. I could go on for days about what the project is all about, but instead I'll just try to summarize what it means to me and what I took out of it.

The Don't Give Up Project is a movement to bring love and marriage back to weddings. It is a movement to bring together photographers as friends and colleagues, not as competitors. I (we) want to dedicate ourselves to creating lifelong images that will follow people from their wedding days to their grandchildrens' wedding days.

It was a weekend of growing, sharing and learning about myself and how I want to run my business. It was a weekend of beautiful surroundings, beautiful people, and beautiful experiences. (And beautiful food.)

We didn't get enough sleep. We didn't dress warm enough. But the payoff? It was beyond worth it.

A Wee Bit of Housekeeping

Some new things are in the works over here and a few changes are going to happen in the upcoming weeks. First and most noticeably, the blog is going to be updated and moved over to the main site at christinemcguigan.com. The look of it is going to change and it's going to accommodate wider photos so you get to see MORE BIGGER BETTER images. This means that you'll have to update your RSS feeds if you view us through a blog reader. I'll give a heads up before that occurs.

Next, the Flash galleries are going to go away and something waaaaay better will replace it. My sham reason for doing this is so readers coming to us via smart phones and iPads can see the galleries. My real reason for doing this is because it will eliminate the need for me to manually update the galleries. (And if you've looked at those galleries lately you'll notice that they haven't been updated in the last 100 years.) Streamlining chores is always a good thing!

One thing you guys might seriously want to take note of here: Prices and packages are going to be changing at the end of September. Another year has gone by with me behind the wheel of this business and I have learned a great deal about what clients are looking for in their photography packages. A few changes are going to take place to better accommodate everyone. As always, anything that is already booked prior to the rate changes will be honored at the current price. No worries about that.

Overall, I think these changes are going to benefit everyone. Clients and readers are going to get better options and a clearer sense of who I am and why I truly value them. And I in turn will have a much simpler platform for reaching out to everyone and keeping them up-to-date with new photos and great things happening with the business.

How is everyone enjoying the remainder of their summer? I for one, am enjoying it immensely. I spent some time last week at a photography workshop in Colorado. It was pretty insane. I have lots of stuff to share from the trip, but first I have to get caught up on a couple of posts that I've missed in the last week!

Chad and Sarah got married recently, and like any bar-owning, brewery-afficionado couple, they had a stellar reception complete with tons of dancing and perhaps a tapped keg or two. The home studio us officially in business. In addition to the technical stuff like lights and cushions to keep your babies from rolling around, I also have backdrops, baskets, chairs and knit props. Everything is in one place, ready to shoot at all times. However, the entire setup is also portable so I can pack it into my car and bring it to clients if need be.

I'm excited to say that I finally had my inaugural infant shoot in my little studio! It was a lot of fun. Jonah was wide awake the entire time. He had no plans to nap and didn't care who knew it. He seemed very concerned about what was happening around him. We tried to get him to fall asleep so we could ball him up and tuck him into a little knit cocoon but he wasn't interested. He got him in a couple times but he would stretch his legs all the way back out and poke his little toes through the holes in the knitting. It was really adorable.

Are you ready for one of the sweetest, happiest, most good looking couples ever? Okay... Here it goes: Check out Melissa and Bryant's wedding! When we shot their engagement photos last October it was clear what amazing people they were. It was freezing that day but they were such great sports about the whole shoot. They were lovely and creative, they didn't complain and they looked insanely happy at all times.

Fast forward to their wedding last weekend and not much about them had changed, except maybe they were even more happy this time around. Melissa and Bryant, along with everyone in their wedding party, was simply a delight to be around. There was no shortage of smiles, jokes and radiant joy. The day ended up (literally) picture perfect.

Perfect Day For Family Photos!

After Graycen's photos last week I met with another group to photograph two brothers and their cousin. By this point all of the post-rain hazey beauty had burned off and it was hot and humid. I was not dressed appropriately and thus turned into a sweaty, hot pregnant mess. Luckily, I'm the photographer and not the subject. Well, lucky for me anyway. I suppose other people still had to look at me. But at least no photos were taken...

We did however get tons of great photos of the kids. I was so glad that we had a beautiful spot and a beautiful morning for these shots. Humidity aside, I couldn't have asked for a better morning!

Graycen's Four Year Photos

Things were looking a little bleak last Saturday morning and I was hoping to get a break from the rain long enough to fit a few sessions in. I ended up getting really lucky with a few families and we got some beautiful light. It was that "after the rain but not quite before the sun" stage when we started out with Graycen and her mom. (It quickly changed into "dude the sun is out and you are being punished for wearing black track pants today" but I'll touch on that with the next family I post.)

I met with Graycen and her family last year around the same time for her three year photos. I was excited to meet with her and her mom again. They're expecting an addition to the family in July! I thought the mom and daughter pictures were so adorable. They're such a beautiful family!

Erin and Matt's wedding was the first wedding I ever photographed. You can go and relive that here if you'd like. They were absolutely fantastic and I was so lucky to have them as my first wedding clients. But holy moses. That was the most nerve wracking five hours of my life.

I've met up with them a couple times since then to take pictures of their son and family. These guys always have really great luck with booking on the nice days.

Last time I saw Cohen he had just turned a year old and I took a picture of his naked butt and put it on my blog. I think he remembered. I have about 300 pictures of him looking at me with his face scrunched up saying, "Noooo!" Much like this:

Jack's 6 Month Photos

I met up with Jack and family for his six month photos. He was just a wobbly little bundle of baby last time I saw him. But now? Now he's ready to start college.

Also in the months since I last saw him, Jack seems to have figured out the whole camera thing. He would smile, laugh, flirt, roll around when I wasn't holding up the camera, but as soon as I brought it up to my face his expression would go dead serious.

Photographers are a lot like magicians in that they both rely on distraction and slight of hand to get the job done. Yes, I have the camera up, but LOOK OVER THERE! THERE'S SOMETHING SQUEAKING! WHAT COULD THAT BE! Pay no attention to what's happening with the girl in front of you.

I feel that this photo should be titled "MAD CRAZY HAPPY BABY!!!"

Lastly before you go, I make no secret of the fact that I love to squeeze squishy baby parts. (My nephew's ankles are like heaven to me.) Well sweet, sweet adorable Jack had the most amazing arms I have ever seen in my life. There are no words for how unbelievably cute he was when he was rolling around between shirt changes. Dottie and Brandon's Engagement

Again with the beautiful people this week! I'm getting so lucky with these client. I literally told them:

Act natural. Like hanging out on a bridge is something you do in everyday life.
Don't be afraid to laugh.
Look at me.
Look at each other.
Wow, look at those people over there making out in the grass...

And just like that, they're beautiful and photogenic without the least bit of pain. (And yes, there was a very-in-love couple laying in the grass, rolling around, making out. In a public park. With children watching.) We also had the luck of taking their photographs when all the lilac trees were in bloom. A lot of them we already losing their blooms and it created this amazing scene of lilac everywhere. It was so pretty.

C. Family Photos

I met this group out recently for their family photos. There are too many names to name, so we'll just call them the C Family. They were certainly a pleasure to work with! First of all, it was a ridiculously good looking group of people. Then add to that the fact that they were all nice. And they even offered to climb up on big piles of rocks for photos. It was a little chilly (and I know everyone was hungry) but they all hung in there and had fun!

Ayden's Six Month Photos

Then he was leaning back in his seat, not paying a whole lot of attention when all of a sudden he sat up and did this.

Like lots of little boys (and not so little boys) I think he likes chillin without his shirt on. He got really excited when it was time to change clothes.

I mean really. Look at this boy. Definitely one of the cutest ever.

Christina and Scott's Wedding

I recently had the pleasure of photographing Christina and Scott's wedding. They were without a doubt two of the nicest people you could ever imagine. Their wedding was a celebration of not only their love, but the love of their families too. The wedding felt so home-grown and authentic. Friends and family helped in almost every aspect of the planning. Flowers, cakes, dinner, the venues, the music, the invitations... I'm sure the list goes on! It was truly one of the sweetest and most fun weddings I've ever attended - both as a guest and a photographer.

Lindsay and Dustin's Wedding Reception

All winter I have really been anticipating the beginning of wedding season. I have been emailing and coordinating with about a dozen brides and grooms and at last these amazing days are here and happening!

I made a comment recently that it can feel weird attending the weddings of people I don't really know. I'm standing next to them, documenting an incredibly memorable day, and I'm pretty much a stranger to them compared to everyone else in the room. A friend replied that it may seem weird, but I get to spend time with these people on one of the happiest days of their lives. Really, what can be a better job than that?

Lindsay and Dustin had their wedding ceremony in Florida prior to coming back to Omaha for a reception, so technically I didn't spend the happiest day of their lives with them. :) Their wedding photos looked so amazing. Beaches, sun, tropical scenery. The day of their reception was warm(ish) but windy. Oh. So. Windy. They did an amazing job though of bringing the tropical vibe back to the reception with them. It was color, flowers, color, flowers, color, color, color. I thought it was all so beautiful!

Delila and Jameson

These two kiddos are Delila and Jameson. We did a shoot for her newborn pictures and his two year pictures. Mom and dad are going to have a handful with two birthdays so close together! How much fun is that though?

I'm never sure whether the baby smiles I catch are genuine smiles or just a lucky shot of a baby making a face. I prefer to think of them as real smiles. Because it's cuter that way. :)
